Five haunting tales from Benedict Ashforth, the best-selling author of Abbot's Keep.

Benedict Ashforth will certainly be pleased with the title of this short review, for after all, it’s the kind of praise writers of supernatural horror expect and always hope to get (being one myself, I know). Having been somewhat disappointed with “Abbot’s Keep”, I decided to give him another try, mainly because I love scary short stories and, which often happens, got attracted by the titles. Happily, I enjoyed this one. Darkest Past contains five stories, all of which were previously released in various obscure anthologies: the first two, “Passing Affliction” and “The Westhoff Version” are both genuinely disturbing, not in-your-face but rather of the silent menace kind, which is much appreciated. While “The Other One” runs along the lines of the traditional ghost story, not very original but solid, “The Setting Sea” about a haunted painting can be considered the most ambitious, and maybe also the most memorable effort. Simple yet sophisticated, “Alderway” works as an effective closing piece. It must be said this is a thin book, and perhaps it would have been a good idea to add another two or three stories in the same vein before publishing (in which case I’d given those four stars more wholeheartedly). But then, there are so many flawed collections claiming so much shelf space, one almost might be tempted to copy the good bits and throw the whopping thing away… On the whole, a satisfying read, recommended for fans of old-fashioned, distinctly British horror.Product details

I bought this book in MP3 form and listened to it while driving. I love to listen to anything in my car which makes traffic and other irritations on the road inconsequential and this group of short stories does the trick nicely. Each of the five stories is narrated by a different person and all do a lovely job. I very much enjoyed Dark Past.
